Story: She sat alone in the cold on the staircase just outside the post office. She had built a small fortress around her with broken cigarette lighters. A ragged coat and torn gloves was all she had left to shield her from the storm. The passers-by would often point and laugh. No one was allowed in. She would chase you away if you tried. Sometimes when I walked by, she would call out to me but I didn’t understand. I didn’t speak her language. One snowy day I passed by her fortress and she invited me in. She had left a small gap for me to crawl through. She gave me an unlit match and rubbed my cold hands in her own. We sat together holding hands on the staircase, small lighter fluid soldiers protecting us from the storm. I still didn’t speak her language but oh, how we laughed and waved as the people passed us by.
